Since 2003, April 11th is observed as the “National Safe Motherhood Day” every year. It is an initiative of White Ribbon Alliance India (WRAI) which enforces that all mothers must have availability of all necessary accesses to the care needed during pregnancy, child delivery and postnatal services.
WRAI in association with other 1800 NGOs requested to the Government of India to declare a day to pay tribute to motherhood.
Indian government then, declared April 11th (birthday of Kasturba Gandhi) as the “National Safe Motherhood Day.”
India is the first country to have officially declared a day dedicated to the safety and security of all mothers.
Each year, WRAI members select a nationwide theme for “Safe Motherhood Day.” They carry out campaigns throughout the country. The goal of these campaigns is to increase awareness that every woman has a right to live and survive pregnancy and childbirth.
